Updated: Feb 7

The burning question we receive on a regular basis: "Are visas required for travel to the Philippines for over 30 days?" The answer is not a straightforward "yes" or "no." Navigating immigration matters can be complex, and our goal is to provide clarity to help you maneuver through this intricate issue.

Before we dive in, a quick disclaimer: We're not legal experts but passionate travel enthusiasts sharing insights based on our experiences as travel advisors. For accurate legal advice, it's always recommended to consult with a professional lawyer.

Visa-Free Stay for Balikbayans:

Great news for Balikbayans and their immediate family members traveling together! You can enjoy a visa-free stay in the Philippines for up to 12 months. This applies if you're a former Filipino citizen who is now a naturalized citizen of visa-exempt countries like the United States and Canada. More details can be found here.

For Foreign-Born Travelers:

But what about foreign-born travelers, not originally from the Philippines, wanting to extend their stay beyond 30 days? If you are a citizen of any of the countries listed here, there are two viable options:

Option 1: Visa Extension at the Bureau of Immigration:

If you're already in the Philippines, you can opt to apply for a visa extension at the Bureau of Immigration, granting you an additional 29 days of stay. This is a practical choice for those who decide to prolong their time in the country during their visit.

For further information, you can refer to the Visa Waiver information from the official Bureau of Immigration website.

Option 2: Pre-travel Visa Application:

Alternatively, for those planning an extended stay from the get-go, securing a visa beforehand is the way to go. Visit the nearest Philippine consulate office or embassy in your home country to obtain the necessary visa documentation before traveling to the Philippines.

Please be aware that each airline adheres to its unique set of boarding requirements. It is advisable to consult with your airline or travel agent at the time of booking for specific details.
