If Costa Rica had a soundtrack, it would be a mix of birdsong, ocean waves, and the sound of someone happily saying “Pura Vida” for the tenth time that day. That’s exactly the vibe at Andaz Peninsula Papagayo, a property that blends luxury with nature in a way that makes you wonder if you’ve accidentally walked into a glossy travel magazine spread.
From the moment we arrived, it felt like we were stepping into paradise—but a paradise that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The architecture is stunning, with open-air spaces that let the tropical breeze do its thing. And the views? Let’s just say they’re the kind that make you forget about your email inbox completely.
The Pools: A Tropical Daydream
The pools are the real showstoppers here. Sparkling water, surrounded by lush greenery, with enough loungers to make you consider becoming a professional poolside lounger yourself. Pro tip: don’t panic if you forgot your sunblock or bug spray—the resort has them waiting for you by the water station. Yes, really. It’s like they know us too well.
Beaches: A Tale of Two Shores
The main beach at the resort is not great, but the real gem is Casa de Playa. Imagine clear, calm waters where you can actually see your toes. We thought we were just going to spend a couple of hours at Casa de Playa, we ended up spending the entire day at the beach. We didn't want to leave.
Food & Drinks: Something for Every Craving
Now let’s talk about the food because, honestly, that’s half the reason we travel. Andaz doesn’t mess around when it comes to dining.
Ostra was our absolute favorite, serving up incredible Southeast Asian–inspired dishes that had us lingering over every bite. The ribeye was cooked to perfection and seasoned so well, we ordered this dish two nights in a row!
Chao Pescao brings the Latin flair, with vibrant flavors and lively dishes that feel like a fiesta on a plate.
Meso offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu, delicious and fresh—perfect when you’re in the mood for lighter fare.
And breakfast? Every morning we headed straight for the buffet at Rhio Bongo. We always make it a point to savor the local specialties—because tasting the culture on a plate is part of the adventure. Think gallo pinto (rice and beans), sweet plantains, and fresh tropical fruits bursting with flavor. Of course, if you’re in the mood for something more familiar, there was no shortage of American classics too: omelets made to order, fluffy pancakes, and baskets of warm breads and pastries.
Whether you’re a culinary explorer or someone who sticks to comfort food, it was the kind of spread that made getting out of bed feel worth it.
It was just announced that Rhio Bongo will soon be replaced with a new Italian restaurant, Gaio. Every restaurant we tried at the resort was excellent, so here’s hoping Gaio keeps that streak going.
Every restaurant had excellent food, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Even the zero-proof drinks were fun, though a little on the sweet side.
Service: Effortless and Warm
What truly sets this property apart, though, is the service. Every interaction felt genuine like the staff were rooting for us to have the best vacation ever (and we absolutely did).
Final Thoughts
Andaz Peninsula Papagayo is one of those rare places where everything comes together: nature, luxury, good food, and thoughtful touches. It’s the kind of resort that makes you forget about time… until checkout, when you realize you’re not quite ready to leave.
